About the Artwork

The piece shown here, depicting the classic Dharma Protector Six-Armed Mahakala, is an example of this kind of custom commission, fitted with an exquisitely crafted gau box for portable wear and suitable for art appreciation, collection, and styling decoration.

Created following traditional thangka painting techniques, the main deity's deep blue body is repeatedly layered with natural mineral pigments to achieve rich and full colours. The three-eyed wrathful countenance is rendered with tremendous intensity. The five-skull crown features delicate ornaments, and the long hair is defined by fine layered hatching lines with distinct textures. The six arms extend dynamically, holding complete and precisely shaped ritual implements such as the elephant hide, chopper and kapala bowl. The deity tramples upon Ganesha, while garment folds and scarves flow elegantly. The background is filled with elaborate flame and auspicious cloud patterns. The striking contrast between orange-yellow and deep blue, together with the compact composition, delivers outstanding visual expressiveness.

Every commission is fully hand-painted by Regong artists. Slight variations in brushwork among individual works are normal characteristics of handcrafted artworks.

  3. Do you have a preference for a specific Thangka painting style? (e.g., Rebgong, Menri, Khyentse, etc. If you have no preference, our artist will be happy to recommend one.)
  4. What are your thoughts on the composition? Would you prefer a minimalist single-deity design, or a complex composition featuring protector deities, entourage, and landscape backgrounds?
  5. What are your preferences for pigments and precious metal techniques? Options include standard mineral pigments, gold leaf accents, or a large-scale pure gold Thangka.
  6. Do you have a preference for the overall color tone? (e.g., warm gold, deep and tranquil hues, or fresh and elegant tones. If you have no preference, our artist will curate the palette for you.)
